About Poker
Poker is a strategic game of chance played between players and usually involving some sort of betting. Poker has
been played in casinos, basements, garages, bars and back rooms for years. Recently the World Series of Poker
has increased the popularity of poker and in particular Texas Hold 'Em. Even though Hold 'Em is the most popular
game there are many more challenging games. Below a few poker games are listed along with general rules.
General Poker Rules
Most poker games involve being dealt some combination of five cards that make up your hand. After rounds of
betting the best hand wins the pot. Hands are ordered as follows.
Royal Flush (AKQJ10, all same suit)
Straight Flush (five consecutive cards in same suit, Ex. 45678 All Hearts)
Four of a Kind
Full House (Three of a kind and a pair, Ex. 99944)
Flush (All cards the same suit
Straight (five consecutive cards, Ace can be high or low)
Three of a Kind
Two Pair
Pair
High Card
Texas Hold 'Em
Texas Hold 'Em is the most popular game in the United States. It's a relatively simple game where each player gets
two cards and there are five community cards. Hold 'Em is commonly played in a no-limit format where a player
can bet any amount at any time but limit and pot-limit games are also played.
Deal - Two cards to each player
The Flop - From the deck one card is burned and three are turned up as community cards.
The Turn - Another card is burned and one card is turned up.
The River - One card is burned and one final card is turned up.
After the deal, flop, turn and river there is a round of betting. Players play their best possible hand of the seven
combined hole and community cards. The best hand wins.
Omaha
Omaha is a variation of Hold 'Em where players are dealt four cards, but must play two and only two cards from
their hand. The game is more complicated than Hold 'Em as players have more options for making hands. Omaha
can be played in no-limit, limit and pot-limit formats.
Deal - Four cards to each player
The Flop - From the deck one card is burned and three are turned up as community cards.

The River - One card is burned and one final card is turned up.
